Our history in motorsports dates back more than 60 years. And in those decades, we have scored major successes under the most extreme conditions across the globe. What we learn on the track has always been the primary feedback that we use to refine our vehicles, in an ongoing effort to make ever-better cars. This is the thread that runs through the GR story, and it has remained unchanged for more than 60 years as we continue to push the limits.
The GR story really began 60 years ago when, in 1957, our engineers volunteered to build a car worthy of the racing circuit. From these early efforts came a culture that now turns our passion for motorsports into high performance vehicles – vehicles that test the limits, with excitement engineered into every drive. These vehicles are tested in the most extreme racing conditions. But the road continues to be our greatest teacher, by showing us what a car should be.
Ever since the beginning, we’ve been racing, learning, innovating - and winning. From the Baja 1000 to the Indy 500. From Formula 1 to Formula GT. From NASCAR to Dakar. Racing is the ideal training ground. And the most extreme conditions serve as the ultimate testing ground to learn the lessons needed to build tomorrow’s cars. Our chairman, Akio Toyoda, is also our master driver. By taking to the road and handling vehicles himself, he embodies our principal philosophy that “Roads build people, and people build cars.”
